Elementary School Teachers

A Primary School Teacher teaches elementary school students, usually children ages 5 - 11 who are in kindergarten through fifth or sixth grade, in a public or private school. Teaches all subjects, including reading, writing, math, social studies and science, to one class throughout the school year. Plans curriculum and assesses student progress, manages student behaviour and communicates with school parents. May specialize in teaching music, art or physical education, or teach students that are learning English, or work with students with learning disabilities or emotional and behavioural disorders.

Daily Tasks

  • Supervises teaching assistants and trainees.
  • Undertakes pastoral duties.
  • Teaches simple songs and rhymes, reads stories and organises various activities to promote language, social and physical development.
  • Maintains records of students’ progress and development.
  • Prepares students for external examinations and administers and invigilates these examinations.
  • Prepares, assigns and corrects exercises and examinations to record and evaluate students’ progress.
  • Prepares and delivers courses and lessons in accordance with curriculum requirements and teaches a range of subjects.
